WAHO, a specialised institution of ECOWAS, is organising in Cotonou, Benin, the Regional Workshop on the Implementation of the Automated Sharing of Routine Health Information Data – Phase 1.

OOAS

This five-day regional workshop brings together National Health Management Information System (NHMIS) managers, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) specialists, and data managers from four pilot countries: The Gambia, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Togo.

Building on the significant progress achieved in the automated transfer of epidemiological surveillance data, WAHO is now extending this innovative approach to routine health service delivery data (NHMIS). This initiative aims to substantially improve the availability, timeliness, quality and reliability of regional health data, while reducing transmission delays and minimising errors associated with manual processes.

Through this pilot project, WAHO seeks to transform the production of regional health information, enabling near real-time analysis of key indicators, particularly in the areas of maternal and child health, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and immunisation, as well as other priority public health domains. In addition to these areas, community health is also fully taken into account within the framework of this initiative.

This first phase of the regional implementation pursues the following key objectives:

  • Assess the quality of routine data in participating countries;
  • Harmonise regional reference indicators with national DHIS2 systems;
  • Design and test a secure technical architecture for automated data transfer;
  • Implement integrated validation and quality assurance mechanisms;
  • Develop a scalable technical and operational framework for extension to other ECOWAS Member States.

At the end of this workshop, the expected outcomes include an operational automated data transfer system, a harmonised mapping of regional indicators, and a robust technical framework to support the progressive regional scale-up of the initiative.

This initiative is fully aligned with WAHO’s Priority Programme on Health Information Systems and Health Research and directly contributes to strengthening evidence-based health governance across the ECOWAS region.
