On 5 April 2025, the West African Health Organisation (WAHO) and the German Development Cooperation (GIZ) held a workshop at Hotel 2 Février in Lomé, Togo, on Large-Scale Food Fortification in the ECOWAS region.
The main objective of this meeting was to align GIZ activities more closely with WAHO’s priorities, foster a more sustainable collaboration between the two institutions, and generate new ideas for future partnerships.
Participants were briefed on GIZ projects and priorities, and discussed ECOWAS’ priorities in nutrition and fortification, with a particular emphasis on ongoing activities in the region. Strategic discussions were held on current and future cooperation, including the vision for establishing a regional fortification alliance and providing technical support to WAHO. The workshop concluded with the definition of next steps aimed at strengthening this partnership.
This initiative forms part of the ongoing joint efforts of WAHO and GIZ to improve nutritional health across the ECOWAS region, contributing to the strengthening of local and regional capacities in the field of food fortification.
