Niamey, 6 September 2017 – The Director General of the West Africa Health Organisation (WAHO), Dr Xavier CRESPIN, went on a mission to Niger to present WAHO’s condolences to the authorities of Niger and also provide support following the fatal floods that affected Niger.
In Niger, he visited Gabou-goura site, a few kilometres from Niamey to see victims of the disaster and the measures the national and regional authorities instituted. The authorities present at the meeting were the Minister of health, the Governor of the Niamey region, the Mayor of Niamey City Centre, the village chief, and the health authorities of the region and the district.
The DG later held discussions with the Minister of health and the Chief Director of the Ministry who is at the same time the WAHO Focal Point. Dr Crespin also met the Governor of Niamey.
The climax of the DG’s visit was the meeting with the Prime Minister, Mr Brigi Rafini; a meeting at which he officially announced the financial support of 75 million FCFA distributed as follows: 52 million for the purchase of two ambulances, 13 million for the purchase of food, mats, blankets, and other essential commodities, and 10 million for medicines.
It is worth noting that the floods caused 44 deaths and made 77,000 people homeless.
