Training of Trainers in Health Sciences on the Use of New Technologies for the Implementation of Harmonised Training Curricula within the ECOWAS Region – Phase II

The West African Health Organisation (WAHO) has launched in Lagos, Nigeria, the second phase of the training programme for trainers in health sciences, following the successful conclusion of the first phase on 29 November 2024.

This second phase brings together over 140 health professionals and educators from across the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), who expressed satisfaction with the first phase and are committed to advancing the goal of enhancing their skills and promoting the use of new technologies within their teaching profession.

Given the increasing public health needs and the shortage of specialised human resources, it has become essential to train educators capable of delivering modern teaching programmes. This second phase will therefore place particular emphasis on the practical components of the training.

The programme offers a unique opportunity to further prepare trainers to adapt and implement curricula in a hybrid format, combining face-to-face teaching with digital tools. Opening remarks during the technical session praised the visionary leadership of WAHO’s General Directorate and the commitment of the Director-General to sustaining this initiative.

They also underlined the importance of knowledge transfer and capacity building, enabling professionals to address the challenges facing the health and education sectors.

Over the course of two weeks, participants from ECOWAS Member States – including lecturers, physicians, pharmacists, and other health and education professionals – will benefit from an integrated and practice-oriented approach, which includes:

  • Installation and configuration of applications
  • Use of OneDrive and collaborative tools for teaching
  • Demonstration and hands-on use of AI tools recommended for education
  • Introduction to WAHO’s Moodle platform;
  • Course creation and the use of Moodle for hybrid teaching
  • Use of Microsoft tools for collaborative work
  • Application of artificial intelligence in education
