Supervisory Mission to The Gambia, Guinea and Liberia within the Framework of the Regional Financing Mechanism for Reproductive Health and Family Planning in the ECOWAS Region

The West African Health Organization (WAHO), with technical and financial support from the Kingdom of the Netherlands, has set up a project for "Sexual and Reproductive Health of Adolescents and Young People" (SRHAY) in the ECOWAS region, for a period of two years starting from January 2018.

Late in 2018 and early in 2019 funds were disbursed to seven of the countries in the region to support their implementation of interventions to improve AYSRH. These countries are Burkina Faso, Ghana, Guinea Bissau, Sierra Leone (in October 2018) while in the first quarter of 2019, funds were disbursed to Guinea, The Gambia and Liberia. These later countries (Guinea, The Gambia and Liberia) are new additions to the WAHO Regional Financing Mechanism for financing RH interventions and products (including SRHAY Project). Hence the need for a specific and appropriate support for the smooth implementation of the project. A supervisory mission was therefore conducted by WAHO to The Gambia, Guinea and Liberia between the 13 and 17 May, 2019.

The overall objective of the mission was to provide the country teams with the needed support for effective implementation of the Sexual and Reproductive Health of Adolescents and Young People (SRHAY) in ECOWAS Project.

The mission specifically aimed at the following:

  1. To review and assess whether the required conditions for the smooth implementation of the project are in place and to offer technical support in the case of  any gaps ;
  2. To review and assess the implementation of sexual and reproductive health interventions;
  3. To provide immediate support and on-site coaching where ever possible in the areas where gaps are identified;
  4. To provide to the country teams with the appropriate tools for the smooth implementation of the project and reporting.
  5. To gather data about the effectiveness of the various interventions funded and to ensure that the interventions are still on track and are likely to achieve the desired objectives

At the end of the meeting, key recommendations were made to the three countries as well as to WAHO.
